On Unity And Division

Below is a blog post I wrote but never published back in 2020, when we were locked down, and the energy of the moment affected us deeply. As I reread it now, December 2023, I find the parallels are eerily similar to what we were doing, feeling and especially saying, nearly four years ago. We are being called to look at ourselves and choose something new . . .

****************************************************************************************************************************

WRITTEN IN MAY 2020

We call ourselves the United States, but truly we are a nation divided. We’ve drawn swords and attacked each other with a ferociousness that would make lions cower. With words as our weapons, we shot arrows at innocent targets and brought them down. Whether on TV, Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, the war of words has become our greatest battle cry.

And watch what you say, because no amount of armor can protect you in a world where righteousness reigns above kindness. Yep, we are united alright; united in stating horrible rants about each other. From a union of states we find ourselves divided by hates.

And while we were busy lashing out in holy vitriol, no one caught sight of the tornado swirling up around us. The vortex started small, but as we took sides, we grew further and further apart, our opinions spiraling out of control. Suddenly, as if by surprise, we found ourselves infected with an invisible enemy. Traveling at light speed on the wings of our negative thoughts, the Corona had landed. En masse, we had created a division so great, that we ultimately created an enemy that could divide us no more.

The judgment and blame we have spat out with our words has risen into a perpetrator that is an equal opportunity offender. It doesn’t care what you think, what you have to say, or whose side you are on. Lest you think we are powerless to manifest something as cosmic as this, think again.

Like Elsa in the movie Frozen, our intense anger has grown into a massive monster that needs to be stopped. And just what did Elsa realize in the end?  Please go see the movie, but if you are one of the few who hasn’t, I apologize, because I am going to break the ending to you here...

Elsa healed with LOVE. Love, in all its hackneyed, idealistic, dubious power. Elsa tamed her inner monster with love and in doing so, literally brought back balance to the natural world.

This is the truth that we have forgotten.  We’ve been so angry at each other, we forgot that we are more alike than we are different. We are one race --- the human race and we are invisibly connected by a viral thread of love!

Our words matter. Our thoughts matter. Our actions matter.

We will always have different ideas and perspectives, but that is what makes us special and unique. We have always been a country that supports individuality, and the freedom of speech. But while we may agree with that, we must turn inward and ask –

Are we creating unity with our words or are we creating division?

Are we being compassionate or complaining?

Understanding or undermining?

Which do we choose?

Which will we choose when this is over?

Are we ready and willing to heal?

We CAN change this!

We can curb the viral gossip we have allowed to divide us so vehemently. Corona is asking us to. It begs us to see that we are all connected, no matter our political or religious affiliations. Instead of asking someone’s opinion, we can ask them how they are handling things. We can ask them how their loved ones are, and if they need any help. Through our help we become the love. Together we are better.

Let’s look around, really look around. And be grateful for the magnificent land we are blessed to live upon and share; our one nation and beloved home,

The United States of America.

Our unity is our immunity.
